Image of Summer Term 2 Week 2

This week has flown by! It started with Class 4 writing diary entries based on their experiences at Green Power last week. By using idioms, slang and contracted words, they managed to show the appropriate formality for the text type. In Science, we developed a greater understanding of renewable enrgy sources and used this knowledge to build our own 'dream' house that would be carbon neutral. With great reflection, we continued our RE through Art topic by exploring the importance of symbolism in Christianity, more specifically, in Westminster Abbey.

In our PE lesson, we explred tennis and developed our understanding of how to serve effectively. Then, we practised our control of the ball by having mini rallies using light touches to keep the rally going for as long as we could. To challenge ourselves further, we had one partner stood in a hoop so that they could not move if the shot to them was too inaccurate.

On Thursday, class 4 had their Summer Outdoor Learning Day at The Howard School. To begin the day, we went through the expectations and safety rules when in a forestry school space. Then, we completed an activity that involved using measure and calculations to work out the height and age of a chosen tree. Afterwards, we took bark and leaf rubbings to highlight the different parts of the tree.

The next activity was golf. We used the field space to set up different holes and practiced our putting skills. Once these were mastered, we had a go at using a wedge to chip the ball over various distances. It was extremely clear that we have some talented golfers amongst our class!

The next activity involved creating origami lotus flowers in the vision to make a sculpture by positioning the finished flowers up a tree trunk. Unfortunately, the neat folds proved a challenge too far and we had too few complete flowers to create an impressive effect. Before lunch, we managed to fit in an extra activity where RE terms such as “love”, “kindness” and “creation” were portrayed through art by using sticks, leaves and their imaginations.

After lunch, we learnt the rules to a popular American game known as Ultimate Frisbee. With great success and many goals scored, we soon got to grips with the rules and managed to enjoy a competitive game with the whole class. With impressive teamwork and communication, many excelled at getting the frisbee into the end zone multiple times.
