We have had a merry, marvellous week in Class 3!
In Mathematics, we have been carrying out our termly assessments where the children answered a series of questions related to arithmetic, reasoning and problem solving. In English, we have carried out reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar assessments which the children excelled in. Also, we were introduced to our new text ‘Until I Met Dudley’ by Roger McGough; We let our imaginations run free by orally planning fictional explanations for how a laptop works.
In science we have continued to investigate using key scientific skills such as predicting, testing, concluding and evaluating. Using a range of materials, we investigated the strength of magnets and discussed how we made it a fair test. In PE we continued our basketball unit where the children practiced passing skills and applied it to a possession drill. In RE we learnt about why Christians celebrate ‘Advent’ and discussed the significance of the Advent candle wreath. In Geography, we learnt about how a mountain is formed using actions.
At the end of the week, Year 4 had their outdoor learning session and Year 3s continued their art unit.
A review from Miss Partington regarding this week’s outdoor learning session:
It turns out, being a small bird in January is tough! We began our lesson by stepping into a bird's shoes. We learnt that these tiny creatures need to keep their body temperature incredibly high just to stay alive. This needs constant energy! The food they usually eat is also harder to come by in the winter months. Our mission was clear: design and create a high-energy food source that can hang in a tree—a Bird Cake! We discussed why some foods are better than others and transformed into professional wildlife chefs, slowly mixing bird seed, mealworm and sunflower seeds into the lard. Some children pressed the mixture into moulds whilst others rolled it. Our bird cakes are now being placed in a cold area to solidify. Once set, they'll be ready to hang in trees around the school, giving our feathery friends the vital energy boost they need to make it through the darkest, coldest part of the year. Well done, Year 4! A great end to our first block of outdoor learning.
Have a brilliant weekend!
