Reflections on a Fantastic, Inclusive Sports Day By Mr Frame
I had the absolute pleasure of leading the sessions for our recent inclusive sports day.
My main goal for the day was to speak with each class about a message I care deeply about: the vital importance of inclusion in sport and the idea that we should play, first and foremost, for the sheer enjoyment of the game.It was wonderful to see how open, enthusiastic, and supportive the pupils were across every single year group.
Class 1: Precision and Fun with Boccia
We kicked off the day with Class 1, introducing them to the fantastic target sport of Boccia .Instead of focusing on speed or power, the children practiced control, strategy, and accuracy. It was a brilliant way to show the pupils that a game can be incredibly exciting and inclusive without needing to be high-impact. The encouragement they showed one another while trying to get their balls into hoops was brilliant to witness.
Classes 2, 3, and 4: Teamwork in Sitting Volleyball
For Classes 2, 3, and 4, we transitioned into the fast-paced, high-energy world of Sitting Volleyball.
Rather than getting bogged down in complex volleyball rules, we summarised the sport into a few fun, core concepts: Staying Low: Everyone kept their bottoms firmly "glued" to the gym floor when contacting the ball. Active Movement: The children learned to shuffle and slide across the floor using their hands and feet to track the balloon. The 3-Touch Rule: We focused heavily on passing to three different friends before sending the balloon over the net to ensure maximum teamwork and inclusion.
By moving away from standard, standing sports, the children quickly realised how level the playing field becomes when you adapt the rules. They got a fantastic upper-body workout, but more importantly, they focused heavily on passing to their peers and cheering for every single effort. Thank you to all the classes for welcoming me so warmly and for demonstrating the true spirit of sportsmanship!
