Learning Log: STEM Flight Day! We began today by naming different things that fly. It was a way to prepare us for the day ahead. Our first activity was to make a flying aircraft. We used a long thin straw, a small large straw, some paper and selotape tape. We assembled all of the air ships and went to the hall to fly the DIY creations. After first break, we were moving on to our next activity paper airplanes we built the ships and went on to the front playground where Isabelle's plane flew the furthest. We investigated if wingtips would make the plane go faster and how Nathan's plane turned over and carried on flying. The class came to a conclusion that wingtips do help the plane to go faster but you do need to make the sizes equal or it will turn upside down. After second break we will learn about spaceships and that Helen Sharmon was the first British person to go to space and had to learn Russian to be able to go into space for she went up with the Russians. We didn't make anything related to space instead we made Sycamore leaves that spin when you drop them. This is the way Sycamore evolved to generate new plants without the seeds getting damaged when it falls. We made rockets that would fly like a stomp rocket. Ernie's stomp rocket flew the furthest. The way we made the stomp rockets was really easy. We rolled a piece of A4 paper around a plastic tube and made sure the paper would not unravel using masking tape. We pinched the end of our paper rocket at staples at the same end. After that we made a nose cone and attached that and the wings to the paper tube with the plastic still inside. Overall it was an amazing day filled with Science Technology Engineering and Maths. Our STEM day was great.
