What a fun-filled first week back after a restful half-term!

In Mathematics, we have started our multiplication & division unit- we have been multiplying and dividing by 2,5,10, 4 and 8 using methods such as arrays, grouping and sharing. Building on learning from KS1, we have been finding connections in multiples and solving multi-step problems to deepen our understanding. In English, we have been introduced to our new text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit. At the beginning of the week, we made predictions about the characters, setting and plot using features such as the front cover and the title. Then we wrote expanded noun phrases to describe the extraordinary, ancient setting (Pompeii) and used these to write a setting description.

In science we have commenced our topic on forces and magnets. We began the topic by sorting what actions would result in a pull force and which ones would result in a push force. In PE we started our basketball unit, where the children practiced skills such as figure of eights and bouncing the ball whilst moving. In RE we learnt about why Christians celebrate All Saint’s Day.

At the end of the week, Year 4 had their outdoor learning session and Year 3s created some marvellous still-life drawings of an apple using charcoal.

A review from Miss Partington regarding this week’s outdoor learning session:

It's been another fantastic week of outdoor learning for Year 4, whose latest session, "Art in the Wild – Animal Character Creation," was a brilliant blend of science, art, and essential speaking skills. Building on previous knowledge, they sharpened their observation skills by identifying specific tree species. They noted key differences in leaf shape (lobed, spiky, compound). This not only cemented their understanding of living things but also reinforced the importance of using the natural environment with respect and knowledge. The main event saw the children unleash their creativity! Working in small groups, they chose a woodland animal—foxes, owls, or squirrels—and set about creating a 2D picture of it, complete with a natural frame, using only collected materials. Each group proudly presented their creation, clearly describing their animal and explaining the specific materials they chose. For example, "We used the long, thin pine cone for the squirrel's tail." It was wonderful to hear the children walking around, giving compliments and offering thoughtful suggestions for adjustments to each other's work.

Have a brilliant weekend!
