It has been a short, yet learning-filled week in class 4. We have carried on our journey with fractions by comparing and ordering them. We have used concepts such as a common numerator or a common denominator compare with confidence.
In English, we have begun our unit based on 'A Retelling of the Iconic Story Anne Frank' by Josephine Poole and Angela Barrett. To start this learning journey, we have been writing our own diary entries using parenthesis, apostrophes and modal verbs. On Thirsday, we created a diary from Anne's perspective as she was left in Germany with her grandma while her sister, Margot, and father moved to the Natherlands.
In PE, we have started our units on basketball and netball. In History, we have enjoyed exploring what we already know about the Second World War and considered what it is that we would like to find out. Music consisted of practicing for Young Voices. 'Our Home' is the new topic for French, where we learnt to describe where we live and name the rooms that are inside.
Survival Skills - Tying the Knot!
This week, Year 6’s outdoor learning session took a practical and exciting turn as we stepped into the world of Outdoor Survival Skills, focusing on functional knots and quick shelter construction. It was a fantastic session dedicated to hands-on problem-solving and collaboration, skills that could genuinely be useful in a pinch.
The Knot Challenge
Our main objective was to not only learn but also safely apply a range of essential knots to build a temporary structure from minimal resources. We had fun learning how to make various knots such as; reef knot, bowline and highwayman’s hitch. Everyone worked hard to master the various techniques before the next challenge.
Team Shelter Construction
The second half of the lesson put our newfound skills to the test! Divided into small teams, the children were given just a tarpaulin and rope, and challenged to provide a basic shelter. Their shelters had to stand up without assistance, be secured using the target knots, and provide coverage. There was real pride in their successes!
Ask your child which knot was the hardest to learn, they will likely be keen to demonstrate!
