This week we have been continuing with with our fractions topic by consolidating our understanding of adding and subtracting fractions, focusing expecially on those where you find a common denomiator. A particular highlight was a lesson that involved a WW2 themed scavenger hunt where fraction calculations were solved to reveal a secret message.
In English we have continued reading our story relating to Anne Frank and have developed our use of synonyms, expanded noun phrases and descriptive writing.
Our PE lesson on netball developed our pivotting skills.
A Wet Weather Adventure: Year 6’s Afternoon of Outdoor Stewardship and ‘Leave No Trace’.????️
What a day! The weather certainly kept us on our toes, meaning our outdoor time was much shorter than planned. But, as ever, Year 6 made the most of every minute truly embodying the spirit of stewardship and resilience, and, despite the drizzle we successfully tackled some vital outdoor housekeeping:
Tidying Up: We gave our outdoor learning area a good spruce up.
Composting Crew: A big effort went into lining our new compost bin and strategically placing it in our area—setting us up for future green projects!
Wonderful Worms: We embarked on a successful worm hunt to add more wrigglers to our fantastic wormeries.
Leaf Collection: We gathered fallen leaves from around the school, helping with general housekeeping and providing some new bedding for our composting efforts!
Inside Challenge: Mastering ‘Leave No Trace’
Once the rain became too persistent, we shifted focus indoors to delve deeper into the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace (LNT). A session packed with critical thinking and active learning. We explored each of the 7 principles, discussing the importance of responsible outdoor behaviour. The children tackled various real-life scenarios, engaging in lively debates and challenges to determine the most responsible course of action according to LNT guidelines. We also played a fascinating game, the 'Trash Timeline', which helped us understand how long different materials take to decompose—a real eye-opener! Finally, we furthered our practical skills by practising various knot-tying techniques..
It was a brilliant afternoon that proved we don't need continuous sunshine to be effective, responsible learners.
