Welcome back to our weekly class blog! We have had an absolutely action-packed week in Key Stage 1. The children have shown incredible curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout all of our learning. Here is a look at what we’ve been up to this week. We didn't let a bit of Monday morning drizzle dampen our spirits! By the time we arrived at Twycross Zoo, the clouds cleared, the sun came out, and we enjoyed a beautiful, bright day. The children absolutely loved seeing all the animals and did a fantastic job representing our school during an educational workshop. A particular highlight was sitting together on the grass for a lovely picnic lunch in the sunshine. Back in the classroom, we put our zoo observations to good use in our science lesson. Using what we noticed about how different animals move and shape themselves, the children successfully identified and matched the skeletons of various creatures. They were real anatomy experts! This week marked a transition in our maths mastery. We successfully wrapped up our unit on Time, where the children have been working hard on reading the clock and sequencing events. We have now launched into our new topic: Weight and Capacity. To kick things off, we explored the concept of mass using hands-on resources. The children used balance scales to measure the mass of various classroom objects using non-standard units (cubes). There was brilliant discussion about which objects were "heavier" or "lighter" as they worked hard to get those scales perfectly balanced! Thursday afternoon saw our Year 2 pupils transform into official Habitat Detectives for an outdoor learning session on the school grounds. We began our mission gathered at 'base camp', where we tested our memories on the mini-beasts we've met before. We sorted them into two categories:

  • Garden Guardians: Our helpful friends, like ladybirds.
  • Pests: The troublemakers, like aphids and slugs.

Armed with their expert "Detective Kits"—complete with magnifying glasses and clipboards—the children split into small teams to investigate under logs, around flower beds, and near the compost heap. The detectives discovered that woodlice and slugs absolutely love the dark, damp spaces under the logs, while ladybirds prefer the sunnier leaves! The excitement reached an all-time high when the children safely got to hold a millipede and see baby ladybirds up close. Finally, love has been in the air this week as we prepared for Father's Day this coming Sunday. The children have been working incredibly hard on some special, secret craft activities for their dads and male role models. They used their best design and motor skills to create something truly personal. We are so looking forward to seeing the look on their faces when these special gifts are opened on Sunday! Thank you for your continued support at home. Have a wonderful, restful weekend (and a very Happy Father's Day to all the dads and grandads!).
