We have properly launched into our learning timetable this week, and the children have thrown themselves into their work with brilliant enthusiasm.  Our reading and writing lessons have been inspired by the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children have been busy describing what Little Red Riding Hood and Granny look like, and we are now beginning to write sentences to retell the story step-by-step.

  • Year 1 writers have been concentrating on the core mechanics of writing: using a capital letter at the start, a full stop at the end, and keeping clear finger spaces between words.
  • Year 2 writers have been building on those foundations to stretch their sentences, using conjunctions (like and, because, or so) and adding descriptive noun phrases. 

In Phonics, we have been hard at work revisiting and introducing key spelling patterns:

  • Year 1 focused on the double-letter and digraph endings ff, ss, zz, ll, ck, and nk.
  • Year 2 focused on the soft 'j' sound spelled as dge (as in badge) and g (as in gem).
  • Home Challenge: Ask your child if they can spot or tell you any words that contain their focus graphemes from this week!

In Maths we continued our work mastering numbers up to 20. Please spend a few minutes helping your child recognise and write all numbers up to 20. A key focus for us at school is ensuring digits are formed the correct way around without reversals (such as writing '3' or '5' backwards). In RE, we read the parable of the Lost Son and spent time discussing the importance of forgiveness, sharing thoughtful ideas about how we can show forgiveness to others at school and home. Year 1 also experienced their very first outdoor learning session of the school year. They absolutely loved getting outside, exploring nature, and taking their learning beyond the classroom walls.
