Class 3 has had a fantastic week filled with lots of fun and fascination!
In Mathematics, we have been continuing our topic: multiplication and division. After recapping division by sharing and grouping, we were introduced to dividing 3-digit numbers using a variety of methods. The use of concrete resources such as place value counters supported the children to develop mathematical oracy as they practiced explaining the process of exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones. Towards the end of the week, we progressed to using the bus-stop method, which proved difficult at first but with lots of resilience, many children could demonstrate a secure understanding. In English, we started to write our own story based on our class text ‘Monster Slayer’, focusing on the use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and powerful verbs. During the week, we practiced editing our work via peer assessment and proof reading. At the end of the week, we re-drafted one of our paragraphs which helped to improve the quality of writing.
In history, we learnt about what was discovered at Sutton Hoo and its significance to what we know about Anglo Saxon Britain. Many of the children in class were surprised at the value of the artefacts excavated by the archaologists. In PE the Year 3s focused on gymnastics where we learnt how to travel and jump in a variety of ways, whereas the Year 4s had a swimming lesson.During the week, we learnt about ‘The Gospel’ and reflected on what Christians Values are emanated in the story of Jesus and the leper. At the end of the week, the children learnt about the importance of being safe on social media sites such as Tiktok. The Year 3s had an art lesson with Miss Partington whilst the Year 4s had art where they practiced drawing techniques such as cross-hatching.
A review from Miss Partington regarding this week’s outdoor learning session:
This weeks lesson was all about how animals and plants are connected by energy. We started our session at 'Base Camp' by talking about energy. Just like we need food to run and play, every living thing needs energy to survive. We introduced some "Expert Scientist" vocabulary that the children used throughout the session such as producer and consumer. To get our hearts racing, we played a quick-fire game in a circle. When "Predator" was shouted, the children had to name a hunter (like a Wolf!); when "Prey" was called, they shouted out a target (like a Rabbit!). We also learned a "Fun Fact": some animals, like frogs, are both! They are predators when they eat flies, but they become prey when a snake slithers by. The highlight of the lesson was our Food Chain Mission. The children were given animal and plant cards and had to find two other friends to form a 3-part food chain. They had to line up to show how energy flows from the ground up to the "Top Predator."
Well done Class 3! Have a wonderful, restful weekend!
